Aquilo is one of the two Spirit gods and the overarching antagonist of Ryse: Son of Rome.

History[]

According to the mythos of Greek paganism, Aquilo, like the rest of the wind-deities, was said to be the son of Eos, the deity of the dawn, by her husband Astraeus, a minor star-deity.

Aquilo was said to have kidnapped Orithyia, an Athenian princess, from the Ilisos. Aquilo had taken a fancy to Orithyia and had initially pleaded for her favours, hoping to persuade her. When this failed, he reverted to his usual temper and abducted her as she danced on the banks of the Ilisos. Aquilo wrapped Orithyia up in a cloud, raped her, and with her, Aquilo fathered two sons—the Boreads, Zethes and Calais, who were part of the crew of the Argo as Argonauts—and two daughters—Chione, goddess of snow, and Cleopatra.

During the Roman Empire's reign, Aquilo pretented to be a mortal and tried to destroy the Roman civilization in secret. However, he failed to do so. Marius Titus' behavior probably convinced him that civilization is necessary for mortals to have better life.

It is unknown what happened to Aquilo after that. At the end of the game, it is implied that the Roman civilization survives to the modern ages, and Catholicism has taken over paganism's place and became the major religion in Roma. Therefore, Aquilo, as well as many other deities, might have been forgotten by mortals.

Personality[]

Aquilo is malignantly playful and is shown to not care about the lives of men, treating them as game pieces. In the earlier parts of the game, he is implied to be completely devoted to Nero, but is revealed to be controlling him in later parts.

Trivia[]

  • When Aquilo raises his voice, he seems to have the voice of a man and a woman speaking together.
  • In real world, Aquilo is the personification of Boreas, who was worshipped by Greek pagans, in the mythos of Roman paganism.
